Care for Kids

August 13, 2018

It’s that time again…the start of a new school year.  The talk is usually about school supplies and new clothes.  Fundraising drives and donation boxes are everywhere.  But this blog post is not about an elementary school student finding his or her way to the new classroom.  This “start of school” story is about a young man who is changing the world his LAST first day of school, and all because he had a hand up and not a hand out.

School life had been tough for “D” all 12 years.  The primary reason for the struggle was lack of money.  The family tugged and pulled for every penny.  Often Care 4 Kids stepped in and helped with school supplies or clothing, glasses or dental care.

Six years ago “D” found himself graduating from high school, something neither of his parents had been able to accomplish.  The cap and gown and gas money to get to graduation was just too expensive.  He knew he would still receive that diploma but no pomp and circumstance.  Care 4 Kids stepped in one last time and “D” walked across that stage just like every other student in his graduating class with his parents tearfully beaming from the audience.

The school counselor tried to stay in touch with the family after graduation, wanting desperately to hook “D” up with the advantages of college.  But life happened and they drifted apart.

Last week a text arrived and the school counselor found herself stopping in her tracks, grabbing the nearest chair and crediting God with her full on goosebumps!

“Hope all is well with you and your family.  I wanted to let you know that “D” will be starting his last year of college in a few days.  He is at the top of his class and will soon receive a degree in Business Administration.  Oh – and by the way,  he is a student tutor.”

Care 4 Kids was always there in the gap.  And God stayed the course with “D” through the rest of his educational journey.  As a tutor he just might be filling the gap for others.

Happy Last First Day to all those positively changing the world.

There are a lot of dirt roads in Ozark Mountain Country. They curve and wind around like brown snakes in the grass. We get familiar with them and learn their routes and then….it rains! The roads change. Directions turn around. Danger arises. So, too, do we find familiar paths in life changing with the times. […]
