It feels like a hamster wheel sometimes. Each day has certain tasks and often those tasks run together and blend into bland…get up, make the bed, breakfast, news, mail, bills, dinner, dishes, phone calls, groceries, trash, cleaning, get up, make the bed, breakfast…
And even though I know there are wonderful things in each day for which to be grateful, it sometimes feels like I may not make that much of a difference in the world.
Then a friend of mine told me about volunteering with Care For Kids. I had my doubts, but I signed on. I must admit the first day I read to my buddy, I came home feeling like I got more than I gave. I enjoyed it a lot and I wasn’t sure he did. The next visit I engaged a little more with him and that night at home I was filled with energy and positivity.
But the next visit was the real deal maker for me. The school counselor approached me to share that my buddy’s behavior had been so amazing since having a mentor that he had received an award for character. She shared that his choices in behavior had changed after the very first visit.
And the hamster wheel came to a screeching halt.
Why am I a Care For Kids mentor?
Because I make a difference!
